Sometime what we were exposed to for years (example in childhood) leaves an imprint in the brain known as a schema that was adaptive (helpful) at one point but has become maladaptive (unhelpful) at a later point in life. Working through our schemas and patterns are important for learning about which part of us is authentic vs what parts of us are inauthentic.
